Growing cocoa represents 33% of our emissions and we are implementing dynamic agroforestry within our cocoa supply chain to reduce this. We estimate this model to increase carbon sequestration into the soil by 509 metric tons of CO2 per acre over 20 years. Alter Eco, and partners, have transitioned 900 acres of cacao to agroforestry out of the 13,000 acres we work with. We are working on expanding this work to 100%.
Logistics and freight represents 24% of our emissions. In 2019 we used some air freight which emits 40 times more CO2 than sea freight. By eliminating air freight we would reduce overall emissions by 7%. Also, adding an East Coast distribution center could cut customer delivery distance in half, reducing overall footprint by 4%.
Packaging represents 8% of our emissions and we have committed to 100% compostable or plastic-free recyclable packaging for all on shelf products by the end of 2020. In 2020, this led us to discontinue our line of plastic stand up pouches used for our clusters, reducing carbon emissions from the production of those bags.
Transition all packaging materials to biodegradable AND recyclable materials (package, garment bag, package inserts, shipping label)
Reduce transport emissions by limiting air freight in our supply chain to 2 or less air shipments per quarter (samples, prototypes, production runs)
Reduce dependence on air freight by consolidating product shipments into two shipments via sea freight per year.
Ensure all products are only packaged in recycled or biodegradable materials.
Change energy plan to unsure we are only purchasing renewable energy options from our electric power company for Zorali HQ.
