Sustainability Story

BioLite is on a mission to empower people and protect the planet through access to renewable energy. Most people know us for our award-winning camping gear like the smokeless FirePit or rechargeable HeadLamp 330, but as a social enterprise, our biggest impact is in our emerging markets division where we've helped 1.7 million individuals access safe, reliable energy through our cooking, charging, and lighting solutions. We're in the business of clean energy, but it takes energy to make that happen - we consume resources to manufacture and ship our products, to power our office, and to travel to our customers. The emissions that come from those actions affect us all and we are committed to mitigating our climate impact. In early 2015, we underwent an internal carbon impact analysis that identified where and how we are releasing greenhouse gases through both our manufacturing methods and our operations. In parallel with quantifying our emissions, we are able to measure the greenhouse gas reductions resulting from the use of BioLite's emission-reducing products in sub-Saharan Africa. We are proud to share that for every ton of carbon we emit in our operations, our solutions in-market avoid 20 tons . In November of 2015, BioLite offset the full carbon emissions history of the company (dating back to 2012) and has continued with carbon neutral operations each year since (see our annual Impact Report for more info: bioliteenergy.com/impact). In 2019, we co-founded Climate Neutral with our friends at Peak Design to demystify the footprinting process and help other brands take immediate action on their emissions. BioLite's vision is to reach 20 million people and offset 3 million tons of CO2e by 2025 with our clean energy solutions.

What is Climate Neutrality

A state in which human activities result in no net effect on the climate system. Requires balancing of residual greenhouse gas emissions with reductions or removals. All Climate Neutral Certified brands must meet climate neutrality standards for measuring, offsetting, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from making and delivering products and services.

This certification covers business activities and operations for the following brands :

BioLite achieved Climate Neutral Certification as part of 's certification process. 's measurement, offsetting and reduction plans fully account for BioLite's 2021 emissions

01 Measure

BioLite measured Scope 1, 2 and 3 cradle-to-customer emissions following categories and approaches established in the Climate Neutral standards.

GHG Scope 1 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 1

Emissions from energy used in buildings, fleets, and equipment.

15 tCO2e

GHG Scope 2 ?

9 tCO2e

GHG Scope 3 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 3

Emissions from raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, air travel, and other activities in the supply chain.

12,236 tCO2e

Total Emissions ?
Total Carbon Emissions

The sum of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

12,260 tCO2e

02 Offset

BioLite invested in projects outside of their value chain to compensate for all of their measured carbon emissions. This step supports their climate neutrality designation, and enables BioLite to take responsibility for historical emissions that can’t be reduced.

Total Investment in Carbon Credits

03 Reduce

BioLite has set targets and identified actions to reduce their emissions from operations and their supply chain. These actions will enable BioLite to emit fewer emissions in the future.

Mid Term Targets

BioLite has committed to reducing 2021 emissions 50% by 2030.

This target is aligned with global trajectories to limit climate warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Reduction Actions

BioLite is implementing a Reduction Action Plan to reduce emissions from within its own operations and supply chain.

Current Year Reduction Actions

01

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions from shipping by continuing efforts to optimize container utilization. We initiated a number of programs last year to accomplish this, but were unable to realize the improvement yet.

How We'll Reduce It

We will use additional storage capacity and container optimization tools we established in 2021 to fit more products in fewer containers.

02

What We’re Reducing

We plan to investigate feasibility of and build a path to implementation to reducing natural gas use in BioLite's HQ office.

How We'll Reduce It

We will study the feasibility of upgrading to heat pumps, paying a premium above our metered natural gas for renewable natural gas, among other possible solutions.

In Progress Reductions

01

100%

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions from purchased electricity at our HQ office in Brooklyn, NY.

How We'll Reduce It

We will purchase 100% renewable electricity through the grid.

02

50%

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions from shipping between our factories and our customers or warehouses.

How We'll Reduce It

We plan to optimize container utilization. In other words, we plan to fit more products into fewer shipping containers. Methods could include i) build a freight optimization tool, ii) consolidate shipments via forward planning or interim storage use.
