Sustainability Story

Petaluma is a sustainable dog nutrition brand with an ambitious goal to challenge the pet food industry's reliance on animal agriculture. Petaluma is driving forward the nutritional science and ingredient innovation to replace factory-farmed animal protein with nutritionally complete plant-based dog nutrition that requires far less land, water, and greenhouse gas emissions. Backed by science and formulated by veterinarians, Petaluma provides all the nutrients dogs need for a healthy and balanced diet. Petaluma is a Certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet and Climate Neutral.

What is Climate Neutrality

A state in which human activities result in no net effect on the climate system. Requires balancing of residual greenhouse gas emissions with reductions or removals. All Climate Neutral Certified brands must meet climate neutrality standards for measuring, offsetting, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from making and delivering products and services.

This certification covers business activities and operations for the following brands :

01 Measure

Petaluma measured Scope 1, 2 and 3 cradle-to-customer emissions following categories and approaches established in the Climate Neutral standards.

GHG Scope 1 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 1

Emissions from energy used in buildings, fleets, and equipment.

0 tCO2e

GHG Scope 2 ?

1 tCO2e

GHG Scope 3 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 3

Emissions from raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, air travel, and other activities in the supply chain.

Total Emissions ?
Total Carbon Emissions

The sum of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

02 Offset

Petaluma invested in projects outside of their value chain to compensate for all of their measured carbon emissions. This step supports their climate neutrality designation, and enables Petaluma to take responsibility for historical emissions that can’t be reduced.

Current Year Reduction Actions

01

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions associated with our dog food bags.

How We'll Reduce It

We will transition to a new bag that uses only one type of plastic which makes them less carbon intensive while also increasing the recyclability of the item by most facilities.

02

What We’re Reducing

We plan to optimize our shipping to reduce transit time and related emissions from downstream shipping.

How We'll Reduce It

We will offer same and next-day shipping to customers in select cities by working with local logistics providers. Re-allocating our inventory based on customer location (rather than a central west coast warehouse) cuts down on travel time and shipping.

01

100%

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce our footprint by buying products from environmentally responsible brands.

How We'll Reduce It

We plan to reduce unnecessary purchases whenever possible, but when we do make a work-related purchase, we will first evaluate Climate Neutral brands.

02

100%

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce commute-related emissions by being remote-first / WFH friendly as a business.

How We'll Reduce It

We plan to make our first hires in Q3/Q4 2021 and will have all roles remain remote-friendly rather than requiring employees to share a co-working space in Oakland or the Bay Area where we're based.
