Sustainability Story

Our work has grown and shifted over the years. From practical solutions such as recyclable non-toxic shower curtains, to human-centered projects such as developing sustainable income opportunities for weaving cooperatives in Guatemala, to designing heirloom quality furniture and objects from natural materials and finishes that you can trust to be clean and safe for your home and family. We limit ourselves to working with materials that are long-lasting, non-toxic, made using recycled content, made from well managed renewable resources and/or are reusable or recyclable at the end of their useful life. We also offer vegan options on all of our designs.

What is Climate Neutrality

A state in which human activities result in no net effect on the climate system. Requires balancing of residual greenhouse gas emissions with reductions or removals. All Climate Neutral Certified brands must meet climate neutrality standards for measuring, offsetting, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from making and delivering products and services.

This certification covers business activities and operations for the following brands :

Grain achieved Climate Neutral Certification as part of 's certification process. 's measurement, offsetting and reduction plans fully account for Grain's 2021 emissions

01 Measure

Grain measured Scope 1, 2 and 3 cradle-to-customer emissions following categories and approaches established in the Climate Neutral standards.

GHG Scope 1 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 1

Emissions from energy used in buildings, fleets, and equipment.

7 tCO2e

GHG Scope 2 ?

6 tCO2e

GHG Scope 3 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 3

Emissions from raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, air travel, and other activities in the supply chain.

92 tCO2e

Total Emissions ?
Total Carbon Emissions

The sum of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

104 tCO2e

02 Offset

Grain invested in projects outside of their value chain to compensate for all of their measured carbon emissions. This step supports their climate neutrality designation, and enables Grain to take responsibility for historical emissions that can’t be reduced.

Total Investment in Carbon Credits

$1,248.00

03 Reduce

Grain has set targets and identified actions to reduce their emissions from operations and their supply chain. These actions will enable Grain to emit fewer emissions in the future.

Mid Term Targets

Grain has committed to reducing emissions by .

This target is aligned with global trajectories to limit climate warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Mid Term Targets

This target is aligned with global trajectories to limit climate warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Reduction Actions

Grain is implementing a Reduction Action Plan to reduce emissions from within its own operations and supply chain.

Current Year Reduction Actions

01

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce vendor shipping and transportation.

How We'll Reduce It

We plan to bring all of our production, outside of our textiles, rugs and glass parts, in-house. We have invested in new tools and equipment to make this possible.

02

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions associated with the materials in our products.

How We'll Reduce It

We plan to increase our use of carbon neutral materials, such as cork, as a percentage of our sales. We will promote our existing cork furniture and develop new products that further explore cork as the predominant material.

In Progress Reductions

01

What We’re Reducing

We plan to move to 100% renewable energy to power our new studio and manufacturing shop.

How We'll Reduce It

We will join Puget Sound Energy's Green Power Program. The current mix is wind (58%), solar (36%), biogas (4%), geothermal (1%) and landfill gas (1%).

02

What We’re Reducing

We plan to eliminate emissions from food waste.

How We'll Reduce It

We are adding a compost program to our studio and manufacturing shop.
