Sustainability Story

Cool Beans was built around sustainability and wellness. Our burritos are 100% plant-based and carry about 92% less GHGs (249 gCO2e) than the leading steak and cheese burrito (2,362 gCO2e). Our hero is the mighty bean which sequesters carbon into the soil and also provides a lot of great fiber for gut health. Finally we built plant diversity into our products to foster a regenerative agricultural system. We have 27 different plants in our first 5 burrito flavors. Plant diversity is great for our gut, great for the soil, and great for planetary biodiversity.

What is Climate Neutrality

A state in which human activities result in no net effect on the climate system. Requires balancing of residual greenhouse gas emissions with reductions or removals. All Climate Neutral Certified brands must meet climate neutrality standards for measuring, offsetting, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from making and delivering products and services.

This certification covers business activities and operations for the following brands :

Cool Beans achieved Climate Neutral Certification as part of 's certification process. 's measurement, offsetting and reduction plans fully account for Cool Beans's 2021 emissions

01 Measure

Cool Beans measured Scope 1, 2 and 3 cradle-to-customer emissions following categories and approaches established in the Climate Neutral standards.

GHG Scope 1 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 1

Emissions from energy used in buildings, fleets, and equipment.

GHG Scope 2 ?

5 tCO2e

GHG Scope 3 ?
GHG Protocol Scope 3

Emissions from raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, air travel, and other activities in the supply chain.

529 tCO2e

Total Emissions ?
Total Carbon Emissions

The sum of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

02 Offset

Cool Beans invested in projects outside of their value chain to compensate for all of their measured carbon emissions. This step supports their climate neutrality designation, and enables Cool Beans to take responsibility for historical emissions that can’t be reduced.

03 Reduce

Cool Beans has set targets and identified actions to reduce their emissions from operations and their supply chain. These actions will enable Cool Beans to emit fewer emissions in the future.

Mid Term Targets

Cool Beans has committed to reducing emissions by .

This target is aligned with global trajectories to limit climate warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Reduction Actions

Cool Beans is implementing a Reduction Action Plan to reduce emissions from within its own operations and supply chain.

Current Year Reduction Actions

01

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions associated with upstream shipping.

How We'll Reduce It

We will move our warehouse within 10 miles of our co-packers facility to dramatically reduce the freight emissions and costs of transporting our product to the warehouse.

02

What We’re Reducing

We plan to reduce emissions associated with our packaging. We are getting pricing on biodegradable film for our burrito line.

How We'll Reduce It

We plan to incorporate biodegradable film into the packaging of our burrito line. If it is cost effective, compostable film would reduce waste going into landfills and the GHG emissions from the waste normally going into landfills.

We will transition to a sustainable web hosting service.

02

100%

What We’re Reducing

We plan to limit future employee travel to necessary travel only.

How We'll Reduce It

Since we are a small startup, our travel would normally expect to increase exponentially during the next year, but we are going to minimize that travel and continue to do more virtually using zoom and other tele-networking apps.
